Lucas

To mention shore fishing, Phil came across a fantastic human-interest story while casting from the pier at Los Muertos Beach.  We have always described this pier as a 'Melting Pot' of individuals and Phil met a very special one in August.  Fernando is a local with a great deal of compassion and a heart of gold.  Over a year ago, he found a Loon (Phil's uneducated guess is that it is actually a blue-footed Booby) who had previously been hooked on a fishing line and when the hook was removed, it left a gaping hole in its neck.  Needless to say, the bird could not feed and was near death.  Fernando caught the bird, sutured the wound and named him Lucas.

So, Lucas and Fernando have become life long companions and meet daily at the pier. Lucas welcomes the small fish that Fernando offers and everyone awaits his arrival with anticipation.  This kind man has been named, 'The Pelican Doctor', he has helped many birds over the years in a similar manner and Lucas is just one friend that has stuck around to show his gratitude.
